How great is this band? I could list five songs that haven't been mentioned by anybody and they'd still be great:
Ruby Tuesday
2,000 Light Years From Home
Back of My Hand
Ventilator Blues
Street Fighting Man
My real top five would be different, but...I don't even know if I could pick five...
Sympathy for the Devil
(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction
Blue and Lonesome (if covers are allowed)
Ventilator Blues (still here!)
Gimme Shelter
Brown Sugar
But I left off Little Red Rooster, I Want to Be Your Man, Street Fighting Man, As Tears Go By, and Wild Horses... And Paint It, Black. And No Expectations.
AND SO MANY SONGS!

Dandelion is also great!
There's also a lot of variety with the Stones.
Now I'm curious: who is your favourite band?
Bowie, Devo, Morrissey/The Smiths.
shareBowie was one of the all-time greats. Doesn't matter how many times I listen to Blackstar, it never gets old, and it's always blowing my mind.
shareWhat's your favorite band?
shareReally tough question. I have a lot of possibilities. My short list is long.
The Rolling Stones will probably ultimately prevail. I'll acknowledge that, for pure innovation and exploration, The Beatles were probably "better," but something about the energy of the Stones is really powerful.
I will say that, for an individual musician (as opposed to a band) if we're drawing a distinction, David Bowie would probably take that slot for me.
Songwriting alone, I'd like to highlight Warren Zevon. He's underrated and had a wicked sense of humour as well as a sense of pathos and poetry.
When I hear "band" I include solo artists because they obviously play with a band. Lol.
I like the Beatles and the Stones, but they're a little too early for me to be favorites. I came of age with punk music.
Still, I'd put Bowie on top. I'm American and when I was a kid most other kids barely knew who he was. It was real rebel rebel music.
That's a very good point. And I did sorta mean "favourite music act" when I asked the question.
Bowie's a solid top choice.
Although, speaking of "too early," I did start thinking about all the old jazz cats and bluesmen (and women) of the early days of recorded music, and there are some strong contenders there, too...
PS
Solid Bowie reference with "rebel rebel". You're a star, man, for sneaking that in.
Thanks. When I was a kid Bowie was dismissed as gay in America. Bowie is not even gay! He was popular in the UK but not here.
Yeah, if you talk about jazz, it's timeless classic. Rock is more tied to the era it was released.
Still, people will be listening to the Stones in 100 years.
He's also good enough a musician: who cares? Gay, bi, straight - Bowie rocked and was a phenominal songwriter and performer.
For jazz, I love the old stuff (Goodman, Armstrong, Fitzgerald) and the later stuff (Thelonius Monk is one of my all-time favourite musicians). Blues I dig the guitar guys like Robert Johnson and Skip James.
I feel like Bowie will be around for 100 years, too.
👍
shareWow! No one ever mentions DEVO as one of their three favorite acts.
I was listening last Sunday to KLOS, which has forever been the home of Zeppelin, Stones, et al., and they played "Gates of Steel." I think it must have been two dudes with a one hour show that was like "music you never heard before." Just weird.
If I remember from my radio days, KLOS was classic rock. KROQ played the more alternative stuff.
Yeah, people refer to Devo as a one hit wonder with "Whip It". I hate that song.🤣
Devo had a long career and recorded several experimental albums and has a fervent cult following.
