Maybe one day transgenders will look like they want
Instead of either:
- guys in drag (due to their physical build)
- freak shows (due to excessive makeup/surgery that make them look unnatural)
I'm all for the theory of letting people fix either their head or body to make them match their true gender (some people truly ain't born clear cut male/female, what are they supposed to do?), and of others getting off their backs (like they themselves were Greek demigods).
But the reality is that most of these people (the ones I see depicted in the news and can tell on the street) do NOT look like their chosen gender, and thus inevitably end up drawing attention/mocking/ridicule from other people whom no matter how tolerant, invariably end up staring at them with the "is that a dude or a girl?" look.
Transgender people who actually look natural and can pass off for their chosen gender (because they'll never really be their chosen gender no matter how much surgery they have and hormones they take) are the exception:
- effeminate dudes whom clearly look like a girl, and thus do look more natural as a woman
- butch women whom clearly look like dudes and thus do look more natural as a guy
The vast majority however end up looking more or less like cross-dressers: no matter how much surgery, hormones and makeup they use, they are bound by their body's frame and type, and after a certain point more surgery/makeup/hormones will only make them look worse, not better.
Laverne is no exception: while she doesn't look freakish, she still clearly looks manly enough to have people guessing.
And with the mainstreaming/acceptance of cross-dressing, you really can't blame people whom upon encountering a transgender person aren't sure if it's a cross dresser or a transgender or what. It can get confusing.
