How did this guy make it?

I've seen him in The Office, some big box office films (Inglourius Basterds), etc - I don't get it. He's not particularly charismatic, engaging, not great to look at, and just a fair-to-middlin' actor. Are his parents "somebodies" in Hollywood?

AND?...HE IS OFFERED A LOT OF PARTS...HE TAKES THEM...HE IS A WRITER PRIMARILY...COMING FROM THE OFFICE WHERE HE ENDED UP ON CAMERA SIMPLY BECAUSE THE OFFICE USED ITS ACTUAL WRITERS AS SUPPORTING CAST.
