Mary Surratt......
was probably innocent.
shareI don't doubt she knew what was going on in her house, and supported it. But if I had been in charge, I wouldn't have hanged her.
sharei read this book and was convinced she was not guilty

She definitely knew what was going on but may not have taken it seriously or did not want to. She had a famous actor (called the most handsome man in America) and probably enjoyed JWB hanging around. I am not sure the other conspirators were serious either, just basting in being the entourage of JWB and getting his castoffs. Reality sunk in with George Atzerodt; he said "screw thus crap" and went to a bar.
