Maybe it's a cultural thing but having grown up in the south, this is not unusual at all. My friends and I were allowed to ride ATVs and go karts and everything else all over the countryside with no supervision. Sometimes we flipped over or got scraped up and hurt but that was rural life in the south and our parents believed in the school of hard knocks. People didn't coddle kids back then. Now admittedly what happened to her daughter is tragic, however she isn't guilty of anything a hundred other parents aren't and the truth is an accident of this nature is unusual.

I grew up riding ATVs and motorcycles as well but I was always either with someone else or supervised by my parents while doing so until I was a teenager. Eight years old is pretty young. ATVs can be very dangerous. When I was in seventh grade, one of my classmates died from being pinned under one after she crashed and rolled. She was with her siblings at the time, but they were unable to get the ATV off of her.

All articles I read say JLS was there and saw it happen. So I don't know why people keep calling it unsupervised.
