If people lived like they really believed in Climate Change

"After our daughter of fifteen years of age was moved to tears by the speech of Greta Thunberg at the UN the other day, she became angry with our generation “who had been doing nothing for thirty years”

"So, we decided to help her prevent what the girl on TV announced of 'massive eradication and the disappearance of entire ecosystems'.

"We are now committed to give our daughter a future again, by doing our part to help cool the planet four degrees.

"From now on she will go to school on a bicycle, because driving her by car costs fuel, and fuel puts emissions into the atmosphere. Of course it will be winter soon and then she will want to go by bus, but cycling through the freezing builds resilience.

"Of course, she is now asking for an electric bicycle, but we have shown her the devastation caused to the areas of the planet as a result of mining for the extraction of Lithium and other minerals used to make batteries for electric bicycles, so she will be pedaling, or walking. Which will not harm her, or the planet. We used to cycle and walk to school too.

"Since the girl on TV demanded 'we need to get rid of our dependency on fossil fuels' and our daughter agreed with her, we have disconnected the heat vent in her room. The temperature is now dropping to twelve degrees in the evening, and will drop below freezing in the winter, we have promised to buy her an extra sweater, hat, tights, gloves and a blanket.

"For the same reason we have decided that from now on she only takes a cold shower. She will wash her clothes by hand, with a wooden washboard, because the washing machine is simply a power consumer and since the dryer uses natural gas, she will hang her clothes on the clothes line to dry, just like my parents and grandparents used to do.

"Speaking of clothes, the ones that she currently has are all synthetic, so made from petroleum. Therefore on Monday, we will bring all her designer clothing to the secondhand shop.

"We have found an eco store where the only clothing they sell is made from undyed and unbleached linen and jute. Also can’t have clothes made on wool, because the emissions from farting sheep are supposedly causing bad weather.

"It shouldn’t matter that it looks good on her, or that she is going to be laughed at, dressing in colorless, bland clothes and without a wireless bra, but that is the price she has to pay for the benefit of The Climate.

"Cotton is out of the question, as it comes from distant lands and pesticides are used for it. Very bad for the environment.

"We just saw on her Instagram that she’s pretty angry with us. This was not our intention.

"From now on, at 7 p.m. We will turn off the WiFi and we will only switch it on again the next day after dinner for two hours. In this way we will save on electricity, so she is not bothered by electro-stress and will be totally isolated from the outside world. This way, she can concentrate solely on her homework. At eleven o’clock in the evening we will pull the breaker to shut the power off to her room, so she knows that dark is really dark. That will save a lot of CO2.

"She will no longer be participating in winter sports to ski lodges and resorts, nor will she be going on anymore vacations with us, because our vacation destinations are practically inaccessible by bicycle.

"Since our daughter fully agrees with the girl on TV that the CO2 emissions and footprints of her great-grandparents are to blame for ‘killing our planet’, what all this simply means, is that she also has to live like her great-grandparents and they never had a holiday, a car or even a bicycle.

"We haven’t talked about the carbon footprint of food yet.

"Zero CO2 footprint means no meat, no fish and no poultry, but also no meat substitutes that are based on soy (after all, that grows in farmers fields, that use machinery to harvest the beans, trucks to transport to the processing plants, where more energy is used, then trucked to the packaging/canning plants, and trucked once again to the stores) and also no imported food, because that has a negative ecological effect. And absolutely no chocolate from Africa, no coffee from South America and no tea from Asia.

"Only homegrown potatoes, vegetables and fruit that have been grown in local cold soil, because greenhouses run on boilers, piped in CO2 and artificial light. Apparently, these things are also bad for The Climate. We will teach her how to grow her own food.

"Bread is still possible, but butter, milk, cheese and yogurt, cottage cheese and cream come from cows and they emit CO2. No more margarine and no oils will be used for the frying pan, because that fat is palm oil from plantations in Borneo where rain forests first grew.

"No ice cream in the summer. No soft drinks and no energy drinks, as the bubbles are CO2."

"We will also ban all plastic, because it comes from chemical factories. Everything made of steel and aluminum must also be removed. Have you ever seen the amount of energy a blast furnace consumes or an aluminum smelter? All bad for the climate!

"We will replace her memory foam pillow top mattress, with a jute bag filled with straw, with a horse hair pillow.

"And finally, she will no longer be using makeup, soap, shampoo, cream, lotion, conditioner, toothpaste and medication. Facewashers will all be linen, that she can wash by hand, with her wooden washboard, just like her female ancestors did before climate change made her angry at us for destroying her future.

"In this way we will help her to do her part to prevent mass extinction, water levels rising and the disappearance of entire ecosystems.

"If she truly believes she wants to walk the talk of the girl on TV, she will gladly accept and happily embrace her new way of life."

"We will replace her memory foam pillow top mattress, with a jute bag filled with straw, with a horse hair pillow."

Sorry, but horses emit too much methane, she won't be riding them or using their hair as a pillow - we'll need ot kill them all.

Her autistic ass will also need to walk and use a rock to sleep on in her unheated living quarters, heated by solar.

reply

Once we start eating nothing but plant-based protein, we'll become amazing methane machines! I'm surprised these Climate Change activists aren't cheering for the Coronavirus. 🙄

I had wondered why they didn't want to use eider duck down. I'm sure they produce methane, too, but at a much lower rate. Besides, they eat slugs and turn them into manure, which would be helpful for vegetable production.

I'm genuinely sorry that she's autistic. Apparently she also suffers from an anxiety disorder. It's unconscionable that her parents fed her all that "YOU'RE GOING TO DIE!!!!" stuff. Mark Twain would write about how the Mississippi would freeze until you could walk across it. There's always going to be headline creating weather disasters around the world. There always has been. But to terrify a little girl who's already suffering from anxiety to push their agenda is just unconscionable.

I heard a horse fart once. I was walking home from school, by an open field where the horse was grazing, about 60 yards away. Suddenly there was a very loud, long, coarse trumpet note, in a bass tone.

When I looked, the only thing around that could have made the noise was the horse. He was continuing to graze.

When I arrived home, I wanted to tell my mother about it, but at that age I couldn't say words like "fart", so the event went unreported.

^^^^^ GOLD!

reply

It's not mine. It's been making the rounds on social media. 😉

Well, kudos for giving it to us here. :)

I came across this by accident and I don't know who this Greta is, but I was shocked at the ignorance demonstrated in this thread. What's especially amazing is that the OP actually took the time to write all these things. Or maybe he/she copied and pasted them from somewhere. Either way, it's the epitome of ignorance. And then the poster who makes a comment about this girl's autism, like having a disability is funny?

reply

I'm amazed that you could type this all while simultaneously admiring yourself in the mirror, patting yourself on the back, and enjoying the scent of your own flatulence.

Well Done!

reply

The OP did not take the time to write all these things. I'm frankly surprised everyone hasn't already run into this. And no, I don't endorse anyone taking shots at Greta's disability. That she can speak English as well as she does has me in awe of her. And I can all too easily identify with her anxiety disorder.

Limousine liberals who think they're helping their cause simply by speaking out, then retreating to one of their various homes by private jet are far more worthy of our scorn.

BTW, I doubt the parents actually enacted these draconian measures on their teen. This seems more an example of reductio ad absurdum. Although giving the girl a few days off the grid and handing her a few books written in the 1860's and earlier might get her to thinking how restricted her life would be if she lived her professed ideals. Having conversations about whether it could be possible to produce solar or wind power without a significant carbon footprint involved in the production of the windmills or solar panels might also be helpful.

Yes, I agree there's no need for this name-calling of the lass.

Especially when there are many other words which describe her perfectly, without insulting her.

Viz:
Conceited
Contemptuous
imperious
snobbish
disdainful
egotistical
overbearing
scornful
self-opinionated
sanctimonious
smug
impolite
ill-mannered
totally lacking introspection
blindly dogmatic,
and last but not least,
obsessed.

reply

All of which could accurately describe her detractors here too, interestingly enough.

reply

With the exception that we are not the ones who are casually denouncing the rest of the world's entire population just for our personal self-aggrandisement. There's a lot of words for that, too.

reply

I get your point and I do not wish to trade the usual insults back and forth. We think differently about this, and I respect that. My point was that I believe the behaviour towards her is wildly disproportionate to anything she has said or done. If her message had no basis in fact, people would simply laugh and move on, not wage a sustained attack on her like we see here.

I know you believe she deserves it, and certainly none of it would be happening had she not started her protest (or was compelled to by other people.. blah blah blah), but I for one don't want young girls jumping on MovieChat and thinking this is what they have to look forward to if they stand up for what they believe in.

I would feel exactly the same way if the young woman was a right wing protester who found a similar platform.

For the record, I never saw her words as attacking the entire world population. It was quite obvious to me that she always addressed world leaders, in her mind I believe, on BEHALF of the entire global population.

reply

Fair enough. I will say, though, that I don't think the inordinate response that she's received has anything to do with the factual-or-otherwise component of her speeches. As you have observed, most of the vitriol that's been addressed to her does not contain counter-arguments of any sort, but rather simply vitriol. Whenever anyone posts a reasoned counter to her points, they immediately receive the same wild insults that she gets.

The issue itself is too volatile and grounded in emotion, and that's solely because she started it off that way. Nobody could deny that her initial tirade, and subsequent speeches, are deliberately and wilfully provocative. She wasn't "warning" anyone. And she wasn't informing anyone. The girl laid down the ground rules with her very first remarks. She stood up in public, bold and obviously ultra-confident, and read out a prepared diatribe in which she unilaterally passed sentence on everyone within earshot. Like an imperious Courtroom judge, she read out the jury's verdict, even though she hadn't even convened a trial. That performance was a vivid display of conceit and smugness, made all the worse because she showed not a skerrick of introspection. To her, everything she said was self-evident and anyone who didn't believe her was "shameful".

If a young female right wing protester did the same thing in the same way, the reaction would make Greta Thunberg's experience look like high praise.
