it was so great on the oc but then she returned to the show with really ugly hair

Pretty sure that wasn't her choice. I think the writer of the show asked her to wear extensions and whatever just so it would appear that time had passed and she had changed because at the time of filming, outside of the show, she was still wearing her hair short.
