Solo is her real name.

There is no such Russian last name.

Small point but for starters she's not Russian. She's Latvian. And it may be just her professional name because her first name is different enough to distinguish her but know knows? There are people with the surname Solo scattered all over the world.

Why do you want to know?

reply

Just because she was born in Latvia, doesn't mean she is ethnically Latvian - there are plenty of Russians there as well. It is unlikely, for instance, that actual Latvians would name their child "Ksenia".

I don't actually care, was just curious, and this is an old thread.

Actually (speaking as someone whose mother was born and raised in Latvia) it is not unlikely at all that an ethnic Latvian would have a Russian first name. Russia is adjacent to Latvia and had SOME influence on Latvian culture even before the official Russian occupation.

Ksenia was born in 1987, during the occupation. During that time, Latvians were more or less disallowed to speak Latvian and were expected to adopt Russian culture, language, and customs. Many Latvian children during the occupation were given Russian names. However, that doesn't mean that ethnic Latvians adopted Russian surnames. According to my mother, "Solo" could indeed be reasonably assumed to be an actual Latvian name.

First of all, 1987 was already the time of Perestroika - not exactly the height of occupation. Second, I lived in one of the former republics as well - that the native population were prohibited from speaking their native tongue is simply not true. There were some who didn't even speak Russian.

And "Solo" doesn't look or sound like a Latvian name either.

If Solo isn't just her acting name, my guess is that it is a shortened version of a much longer Slavic surname. So far I have not come across any info as to what her full surname might be. It could also come from selecting certain letters from her original surname. My grandmothers original surname is Krivohlavá but she changed it to Kirk.
