During the first season they prerecorded the kids reactions and scenes.

More interestingly they filmed their scenes 9yrs ago. They've known for all that time how the show was going to end.
More interestingly it's clearly one of the few shows where the writers had a clear idea at the beginning of the show and stuck to until the end.
