I do agree about his writing. It's actually gotten worse over time. His first two movies were more humorous. Lightening the tone made those one dimensional characters easier to tolerate. They were more like a send up of those sleazy grindhouse movies he clearly loves.
I actually think he's a decent director. He knows how to give his movies a certain look and atmosphere.
