Bad acting choices !

After having watched SPL and Flashpoint, which both are maybe the two best films in the genre of the type of "gritty martial art cop films" and Ip Man 1+2 in the period martial artist films since Once upon a time in China, I have since been waiting for the next really great action film from Donnie Yen.

Why is he wasting his talent doing those finely executed yet boring as hell chinese sword and sandal films and plain dumb fantasy flicks where he plays some sort of monkeymen and such awkward characters? A Ming dynasty warrior frozen in ice for 400 years??

I had VERY high hopes for the Chen Zhen film, but i just couldn't sit it through even halfway. The martial arts in the film were just too over the top and the acting way too cheesy even in John Woo standards.

I haven't heard anything positive about Special ID, only that it is a mixed bag of bad acting and stupid plot with some little fighting in it, and after viewing some of those clips in YouTube, the fight scenes lack any sort of dynamic impact which SPL and Flashpoint are famous for. They maybe realistic and very MMA style but not so fun to look at.

If someone has better knowledge about his future projects, would there be anything even close as good as SPL?

Harry: Well yeah, there was like an 8% chance.

I must say even though not a fan of the original Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, im interest with the sequel. Although it most likely will be an operatic wireworks film, which im not so fascinated by.
BUT Dragon City, an martial arts film set in 70's you say ? Somebody call Lalo Schifrin, because that sounds just too awesome! Im also surprised that they are moving on with the third Ip Man film, that is good news.

I just think that Donnie should try and make a film with an american studio, although not let anyone interfere with the creative progress, which i dot even think is a real problem. In worst case they try to partner him up with RZA.

Check out his past records. He is never considered a good actor, have you seen him acted well before ?
If Jet Li don't recommend him to Zhang Yimou for Hero or don't go into semi retirement, he probably would not get this Ip Man. He has never win any acting award. His donkey face just cannot act. Considered him very lucky already.

He's one of those people who likes challenges by trying out new roles and pushing the limits of action choreography doing different stuff. So don't expect him to make the same type of movies playing the same roles.

Kung Fu Jungle and Ip Man 3 are pretty good and his best work since Wu Xia. And if you look at some his upcoming movies, there's good premise.
