Many of the characters he plays are supposed to be slightly stilted and weird (like Dwight, on "The Office"). Not everyone in the world is overly emotional and frenzied. His characters seem relatively normal to me whereas most of the other characters (actors?) he is playing against seem over the top emotional and turn me off.
Maybe some people like overly-dramatic, flamboyant people, but that's not what acting is. Acting is portraying someone that is unlike you convincingly. Some characters do speak in monotones and act similarly, and some people are great at portraying them. Frankly most television and movie characters act nothing like the people I know. They are so over the top that it's hard to take them seriously. I like Rainn's characters, and it's important not to confuse his characters personalities with his acting abilities.
He does a wonderful job as Dwight, and I also liked him in House of 1000 corpses and on 6 feet under.
When I pull the wings off of the fly/ The fly never wonders why I did it.
