Fake American Accent Faking a Fake English Accent

In season 2 of The Wire, McNulty has briefly has to pretend to have an English accent. Just thought that was funny: a mediocre American accent trying to pull of a terrible English accent.

My question is, why not just have him be good at an English accent? If his parents were from Ireland, he would be much more familiar with the UK accents and more likely to pull it off.

He did a fantastic impression of an American doing an English accent.

Yorkshire is a place. Yorkshire is a state of mind.

Dominic West was born and grew up in England, and went to Eton. I think that would help him more than having Irish parents.

Also (in response to a comment lower down) I don't think anyone suggested Ireland was in the UK. It was said that Irish people might have more exposure to English accents than Americans would. Whether or not this is true, I think it is at least plausible considering the geographical proximity of Ireland to England.

Tell that to the roughly 1.8 million living in northern Ireland that is considered part of the UK.
