yes, sexual orientation and gender are two completely different things. If she identifies with being female that would be her gender. If she likes women that would make her a lesbian.

So he was a man but wanted to be a lesbian woman.. interesting.

It's more complicated than that. Gender identity and sexual preference don't have anything to do with each other. I know quite a few transgendered people, and you'd be surprised how many of them end up in same sex relationships after the sex change.

That's so weird. I guess if you don't know much about it, you might think that it's an extreme form of homosexuality but it isn't.

Exactly. It is a very difficult thing to wrap one's head around. The people who would get a sex change will almost always say they knew from a very young age that they were not in the right body. That must be such a bizarre and confusing thing to have to live with, especially with so many people being so judgmental about situations they simply do not understand.
