So is the flop of Speed Racer career ending?

Will the Wachowskis not be able to make any more films?

After the way they squandered the Matrix trilogy, which could've been epic storytelling equaling or surpassing the greatest movie mythologies of our time, I hope not.

Seriously, the Matrix was all set out to be the "Star Wars" of my generation. Now, I really wish they had just left it a stand alone movie. Especially since they didn't know where the heck they were taking the plot in the next two, uneven, movies.

Speed Racer is just a movie that brings blatant attention to their weaknesses as writers. That being telling a meandering, obese story. The Matrix must've been a fluke. V for Vendetta was a pretty faithful adaptation (to the source material) so it doesn't really count IMO. And they directed it neither.

Are you kidding? I went into Speed Racer not so much excited and I came out freaking besotted. They just bled total brilliance all over that movie in my opinion. I didn't know it was them in the beginning then hints such as certain cast members from V For Vendetta got me wondering. If V For Vendetta didn't have me loving them Speed Racer certainly has. 10 out of 10 for me. I only regret that it has been so poorly advertised.

I must agree, compared to the Matrix, everything else they've directed/produced does not compare. Something else, is in the mix that created such genius of a Movie that is The Matrix. It's obvious someone or something else influenced such genius. So far, I haven't seen that "genius" resurfacing in their latest works. Perhaps, it was the influence of Sxean Lee-David or Sophia Stewart who claim some contribution to the original Matrix movie, I don't know,... however, it certainly isn't something the Wachowski's conjured up on their own. Everything they've created since then show not a hint of genius but mere imitation. Well, Speed Racer is something new, but not fantastic, just different. I enjoyed it, but it was a convoluted mess of film editing and story telling.

I doubt it's Career ending, they're already working on Ninja Assassin. I'm sure the Wachowski's have more tricks up their sleeves.

like many, i had low expectations from the trailer and was put off and i said to myself, 'wtf are they thinking'. speed racer was brilliant. if you watched the original speed racer you would understand. no interpretations, no re-imagining, no modernization, 100% faithful.

Gotta say, I disaggree. Have you seen Bound? It shows a lot of the same style and personality as The Matrix? What about Assassins?
Even better, Ecto-Kid a comic they wrote in the early 90s. It has some scenes which are almost carbon copies of scenes from the matrix films, including a character who behaves exactly like Smith from the sequels.

Even V For Vendetta, yes it was based on a comic by Alan Moore, but they did changed a lot, and the things they changed showed the brothers own style.

I do agree that their post-matrix work has been a little bit Bleh. The comic Doc Frankenstein is just obnoxious liberal propaganda (and I am a liberal, that's how obnoxious it is) and Shanolin Cowboy is...umm, no idea. Speed Racer was psychedelic. And their new film Ninja Assassin doesn't look good, I could be wrong but so far I'm not impressed.

But still, even in the worst of their works, it is clearly written by the same people, the same themes, styles, humour and personality shows through.

I'd love to say they didn't write the matrix, because then I could seperate the people who made the matrix from the people who made speed racer, but from what I have seen of their work, I just can't do that.
They were all written by the same people...it's just now the brothers are having an off day/year.

Hopefully Ninja Assassins will be a return to good material.

Apperently not, as they've supposedly been offered to make a superman trilogy.

Dont care much for Superman, but if the Wachowski's were making it, then it'd suddenly become very interesting.

Shame they didn't get to do Dragonball.

What is the Monster?

Speed Racer is a fantastic movie. It is so true to the original show yet it is its own. I hope both of the siblings make more movie because they are fantastic filmmakers.
