John Waters Movie Mamie Turned Down

It's often been written that Mamie refused a John Waters movie because she didn't want to work with Divine. Does anybody know exactly what role and movie it was? Is the story in fact true?

I cannot believe Mamie would have turned down ANY major movie post 1980's - even back in the 1960's she accepted some really terrible pictures just to work. Even if she was afraid of being made to look ridiculous opposite Divine and made to look her worst, it was just a movie and many stars have played wacky roles. She could have made the movie looking like hell and then go on the publicity circuit for the movie showing how gorgeous she really is.

And if she did indeed turn down the Velma Von Tussle role in HAIRSPRAY... DAMN, that would have been the BEST role of her career!! Even better than TEACHER'S PET or HIGH SCHOOL CONFIDENTAL. I mean Deborah Harry took it and she is quite a bit younger. And then with the hit musical version and now the current movie smash version she would have gotten a ton of new publicity and maybe even a cameo role in the current film. If she did indeed turn down HAIRSPRAY that has got to be the biggest mistake of her career, even bigger than turning down the Broadway version of WILL SUCCESS SPOIL ROCK HUNTER because how many sexy blondes get a major role in their fifties.
