Donnie's dementia is a bigger factor than his age. And this isn't necessarily age related dementia, the onset of Donnie's dementia was evident quite some time ago. To begin with the progression was rather slow, but it has lately been progressing rapidly. Possibly due to the stress of him knowing he is going to prison for a multitude of crimes.
