That shooter just guaranteed an election victory for Trump, instead of destroying him. Even people who normally aren't fans of Trump will be possibly moved enough to side with him.

Biggest reasons were pardoning Nixon and the huge debate gaffe where he claimed eastern Europe wasn't dominated by Russia.
