The electoral college is a disaster for a democracy

That was a tweet from Donald Trump, November 2012.

After losing the vote by nearly 3 million but winning via electoral college:

“The phoney electoral college made a laughing stock out of our nation,” he wrote in deleted tweets, and then added, “[Obama] lost the popular vote by a lot and won the election. We should have a revolution in this country!”

Trump was wrong; Obama actually won the popular vote over Republican Mitt Romney by 5 million votes, and carried the Electoral College, 332 to 206. In 2016, Trump lost the popular vote to Hillary Clinton by some 3 million, but carried the Electoral College with 304 votes. He has tried to exaggerate the significance of his victory by claiming the Electoral College is stacked in favor of Democrats, although most political scientists believe the opposite.

Trump is the ultimate flip-flopper, he does this with literally every issue.

He has no standards whatsoever except whatever serves his needs and feeds his ego.

This isn't a democracy. The electoral college keeps it from being one. Which is a good thing. You call it "antiquated" yet aren't qualified to pick taters for the intellectual giants that wrote our Constitution.

Does this mean you consider every Amendment to be frivolous?

reply

Yes! The Electoral College needs to go NOW! Look who it elected. Pathetic.

The electoral college is doing exactly what it was designed to. Keeping the more populous cities from holding sway over all the rest. You morons trying to change the rules so you can win are sewing the seeds of destruction. Nothing more than sore losers with ZERO perspective.

"Electoral college is a disgrace!"

Said every loser of every election.

reply

Yup, pretty much this. It would be funny though if Trump loses but gets more votes.

Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.) announced on Friday that he is introducing legislation to abolish the Electoral College as part of a package of election reform bills.

"It’s time to end the undemocratic Electoral College, and to ensure a pathway to full voting representation for all American citizens, regardless of whether they live in Portland or Puerto Rico," Merkley said in a statement.

The bill would propose a constitutional amendment to nix the Electoral College and elect the president by a direct popular vote.

Merkley, as part of a "We the People" democracy blueprint released earlier this year, argued that the current system for electing a president is "profoundly unfair" and has resulted in two elections over the past two decades where candidates didn't win the popular vote but still won the White House.

If you can't win, be crooked! If you still can't win, change the rules! - Democrats 2020.

If you can't defend Republican policies when they're criticized, launch immediate profane ad hominem attacks against the critics and increase the profanity and obscenity until the people are bullied off the board! And gerrymander the electorate and commit direct voter fraud and conspire to collude with anybody to rig elections when it looks like Democratic candidates might win! - Republicans

reply

Hearing liberals complain about voter fraud, oh thats rich. ha ha

reply

Repubs are guilty of serious gerrymandering.

Concentrated power doesn't like democracy. The Repubs are barely a political party anymore. More of a mouthpiece for corporate interests.

Have fun voting against your own interests!!!

Trolling is original, unique and creative. You're totally not blandly parroting the exact styles and strategies copied by thousands of others. You totally don't sound indistinguishable from the other trolls, and it totally doesn't give the impression of an ultraconformist hive mind mentality.

reply

Republicans get caught with voter fraud, election fraud, and gerrymandering so much and have to admit to it so often that the only way they can counter it is to make up stuff like "3 million illegals" voting for Hillary.
