I truly fear Trump has 2020 sewn-up

The Democratic candidate roster so far is very large, but also very uninspiring. None of these candidates seem that they have the capacity to unify and draw in the types of voters who left the Democratic Party in droves in 2016.

As much as I'd truly like to see a female candidate, particularly one of colour, like Kamala Harris, get the nomination, I also suspect that contrary to all the Millennial bleating, only a Baby Boomer, like Joe Biden, can unify an increasingly aging country across the generational lines. If the DNC skews young, it will risk alienating all the older voters who are guaranteed to go out and vote in a way one can't say with respect to the under 40s. Even Bernie, despite being to the left of the Democratic Party, might be a better bet than some of the other candidates thanks to his age and thus his comparative capacity to relate to older generations.

So, please can you bushy-tailed and bright-eyes Millennials get your heads out of your asses, and start thinking about the smart way to beat Trump in 2020: that means supporting a candidate who can engage older voters, as well as the young (who, when they do bother to get off their asses to vote, already tend to skew Democrat anyway).

Bear in mind that whoever the Democratic candidate was in 2016, they were almost due to lose anyway (the last time the incumbent party won a third term in the White House was way back in 1988!) Despite everything being stacked against her, Hillary still managed to get three million more votes than Trump, and had she instead waited until 2020, she would surely have won the EC (in hindsight it's a shame she didn't wait until 2020, and it's an even bigger shame that she's ruled herself out of the running this time). That is why the DNC needs another candidate like Hillary, preferably a woman, better yet a woman of colour, who can win those older voters.

I also fear the orange, fat, infantile hog will be re-elected. It's horrifying to think that such a...CHILD could be loved, adored and defended THIS much as a PRESIDENT but such is our current state of affairs.

The 2020 election (much like 2016) is the democrat's to lose. They could so easily beat that madman if, like you stated, they pulled their heads out of their asses. I don't see that happening, though.

reply

Pretty much agreed, and I'm also in the camp of "I don't see Democrats winning".

reply

Try and keep in mind that Trump actually lost the 2016 election in terms of actual vote cast (the only result that SHOULD matter, but doesn't because the United States' voting system is not truly democratic). I don't want to sound over-confident, but I feel more states are going to abandon Trump in 2020 (especially the 3 Midwest states that carried Trump into office) and the only support he'll have is from his base...and 35% of the electorate is not going to carry him into office no matter how many Dixie confederate and old-white-guy-evangelical states he carries.

Yes, the Dems could screw up and put forth a candidate who alienates moderate voters but I don't think they will. Nothing is ever 100% sure in politics, but I'd put my money on the side of Trump being a one term President.

reply

I wish and hope you're right. Perhaps I'm just so bitter to the point of pessimism regarding Trump. I don't know. I just have NO faith left in our fellow Americans. NONE. Trump's win killed my faith in Americans. Hell--their continued and 110% unwavering support of his lunacy just pisses me off to no end and leads me to believe there is nothing that can deter people from this absolute psycho.

We'll see, though. I sure hope you're right.

reply

If Biden runs, he is the best bet for the left. He's established, he's tight with Obama, and he's not one of those new age socialists. Even if the young people love Bernie, they will vote for Joe. Biden wins independents, which Hillary couldn't do.

reply

Yes, but for every independent vote that Biden insures, he also has the potential to alienate progressive voters within the Democratic party. Biden won't "turn" any of these voters against him to want to vote for Trump, but there is a fear that choosing Biden as the nominee might keep these voters from voting at all. Of course, Biden could appease all sides (except Trumpers, of course) if he chose a progressive as his VP running mate and promised to be only a one-term President.

reply

If they run anyone other than Biden or Bernie, we're screwed and Trump will win again. I have ZERO confidence in ANY of the others running.

reply

President Trump will be re-elected for 2 reasons

1-The economy is doing well.
2-The Democrats have gone too far to the Left.

reply

I keep hearing all this talk about the economy "doing well" but absolutely NO talk about how our deficit was driven up by record standards and recession-level conditions.

I see a lot of talk about Democrats going too far to the left (which is true) but no talk about how Republicans are going too far to the RIGHT (which is also true).

reply

Couldn't agree more with this and not surprised KING didn't respond. The tax scam has only made deficit worse and now tramp wants to cut SS and medicare. Hope his supporters are happy b/c they live in those red states!!!

reply

Exactly. Trump's base, ironically, stands to be hurt the most from what Trump is doing. They'll realize it when it all comes down...but they still won't relinquish their support of Trump because they're just that partisan and THAT hateful of the left.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: Many Trumpers would rather watch the country burn down than ever give power to the left again. That's dangerous thinking.

Sometimes I wonder if the Trumpers EVER realize how closely aligned with the Muslim terrorists their own ideology actually is when it comes to their partisan thinking.

reply

The country will burn down if the left is ever given power again

reply

Nah, just a lot of alt-right psychos will ooze out of the woodwork and probably hurt some people, unfortunately. But at least that will bring these vermin out of the shadows into the light and they can be dealt with then, and whatever terrorist cells they belonged to, also.

reply

As annoying as I find a lot of the far-left--I have to disagree with you entirely. Many on the left have their problems but I find them more annoying than anything else. With Trump supporters, I actually fear some of them and think they'd do something crazy if Trump loses in 2020.

Both sides are bad in their own ways but I find the far right side FAR more dangerous of the two at the moment.

reply

Tramps base will do something crazy. He is already sending out the death threats by saying he's got bikers for trump and something else and saying they will not fail to act on his behest.

reply

The left has Antifa and BLM, actual domestic terrorist groups.

reply

I also think Trump will get another 4 years.

Popular votes are good for smaller territories such as a country like the UK or the 50 states, but not a big country like the US as a whole. The electoral system is set up so every smaller regions, i.e. states, has a say. So I support the current system: popular votes determine a state's outcome, while electoral votes determine the nation's.

reply

I dont think thart Biden is the solution. He stands for the Obama administration. and for the washington that is hated so much these days. Also Trump has solid 40% support in the moment. just like other presidents at this time and despite all the cohen/mueller/media stuff. Have a read in the "trump's reelection 2020" post:

reply

As long as the DNC doesn't screw Bernie over, he will be a contender!!

Feel the Bern!!

reply

I'm worried they're going to be stupid again (like they were with Hillary) and run with a living, breathing PC statement like Warren or someone. If they do that, we're screwed.

At this point, our own hope of getting rid of the old orange guy is with an "old white guy". That's the reality. So, I hope they can keep the PC Warren and others away and just run Biden or Bernie because Donald WILL win again if they run anyone else.

reply

Who is "they"?

Many key DNC leadership positions in 2016 were handpicked by Hillary (ahem Debbie Wasserman-Shultz) and acted as an arm of the Clinton campaign wing last time. It would be Dem primary voters deciding on the candidate they're going to nominate this time. Tom Perez would have no similar incentive to put his thumb on the scale.

reply

to unify and draw in the types of voters who left the Democratic Party in droves in 2016.

Republican party lost the 2016 vote by nearly 3 million. How many million extra votes are required for a Democrat victory anyway? Urban votes are artificially deflated and rural votes are artificially inflated.

reply

Ya it's totally messed up that the weight of your vote depends on where you live. Not very democratic at all. Should be one person, one vote.

Why do people in Wyoming get 3.6 times the vote of people in California? If I was in California I would be calling for a referendum to leave the union

reply

The US is not a democracy its a Constitutional Republic. The electoral college was created to protect the citizens of the country as a whole, not just factions of it.

reply

How does over representing one faction over others protect the country as a whole?

Well at least you admit you don't have democracy. Now if you could just stop trying to "bring democracy" to the developing world that'd be great!

reply

A system that elects the contender the majority of Americans didn't vote for doesn't sound like protection to me. It sounds like the opposite.

reply

The electoral college was created to protect the citizens of the country as a whole

Wrong. The electoral college is an outdated, archaic system that was used to inflate the representation of smaller communities at a time when communities were sparse and separated, when communication was limited, etc.

It also has roots in slavery, as it inflated the votes of landowners and deflated the votes of anyone who did not (like slaves.

It has no place in our current country.

reply

The Electoral College was included in our Constitution as a pro slavery protection dude.

James Wilson was a delegate to the 1787 Philadelphia Convention, and served on the Committee of Detail, which produced the first draft of the United States Constitution. Along with Roger Sherman, he proposed the Three-Fifths Compromise, which counted slaves as three-fifths of a person for the purposes of representation in the United States House of Representatives. He also proposed the Electoral College. After the convention, he campaigned for the ratification of the document, and his "speech in the statehouse yard" was reprinted in newspapers throughout the country. He also played a major role in drafting the 1790 Pennsylvania Constitution.

The Southern states had fewer people except the slaves who couldn't vote. Accordingly, the Electoral College was based on population representation, and the "three fifths" of a person fitted to an owner's slaves added significantly to their voting heft. That's the reason we still have it. Tradition! But for the same reason it's antiquated and needs to be gotten rid of.

reply

You don't even believe the crap you spew. You see all the replies countering your position but you don't say anything to them.

reply

The Citizens United or whatever its called, the ruling that affirmed SuperPACs, set a firm precedent that could be used to overturn the Electoral College system. It said that government cannot reduce the power of speech. Inflating and deflating votes is reducing the power of speech in a person's vote.

reply

California and Texas bumped their primaries to March 2020, very early, will have very big impact, both voter bases could potentially pick the two main candidates, pretty sure the closer primary time comes the more the news media will pick up on this

reply

The electoral college needs to be abolished. Donald Trump's election win more than proves that.

It's complete and utter bullshit.

reply

Its needs to be tweaked - states are underrepresented, over-represented, but it works.

reply

Agreed. If it were by popular vote, dems would win 100% of the time and I would think that is a recipe for disaster, eventually. Funny thing is, gop has only won with EC in the last 26 years.

reply

The GOP has no interest in improving, all they care to do is placate their rural voter base. That's why they have no platform and spew propaganda constantly.

The electoral college has clearly poisoned the GOP.

reply

Uh huh. Who do the libs placate? Criminals, illegals, the deadbeats and losers of America?

reply

"Uh huh" yourself, skippy. I consider myself predominantly liberal (but I'm not 100% behind every liberal position), and yet I am not a criminal, not an illegal, and I have and have had a full-time job for nearly all of my adult life so I am not a deadbeat.

But as you like to denigrate those who oppose your conservative FuxNews talking points and stereotype the opposition, it clearly appears the only "loser" in this discussion is you.

reply

"If it were by popular vote, dems would win 100% of the time"

W Bush won the popular vote in 2004. Before his popular vote loss in 2000 that kind of presidential victory was unheard of in the modern era. Bush beating Gore and losing the popular vote threw everyone for a loop. Unfortunately when it happened for Trump we were still a little desensitized to it. What you are saying is it should rightfully be the norm now. It most certainly should not.

Yes abolishing the EC could eventually be a big problem for republicans but its because they are conservative and refuse to progress along with mankind.

reply

Neither the Republicans nor the Democrats have anybody that is very inspiring. I mean if not Trump who were Republicans gonna vote for? Jeb Bush out there like "My wife says we need to open the boarders"?

Democrats really only have Hillary and the half of her base with a brain knows she's one of the biggest crooks in Washington. Joe Biden is their only other real possibility but the party has become so Anti-White Male it don't seem like it can be done.

reply

A final candidate will be chosen. We don't know who. There is a woman of color candidate . ..Kamala Harris.

reply

Its seeming more likely every day when we have corporate stooges like Donny Deutsch saying on MSNBC they would vote for Trump over Bernie.

reply

The conservative faction of the Democratic Party (it seems like an oxymoron to say, but we all found out it exists when certains moves were made to ensure Hillary got the nomination over Bernie in 2016) is actually more on the side of opposing any progressive nominee for President just like the Republicans. The only hope is that these doofuses can all get behind a candidate that can appease both the moneyed interests AND the progressives within the party before they splinter too much and fuck things up again.
