Someone explain tariffs on free trade...

Aren't tariffs enacted to protect I dunno those at home from being hurt by competition? Like if products are sold cheaper elsewhere or people prefer things overseas, wouldn't that hurt the American worker? Then in order to protect them they would add tariffs on foreign goods selling those products which I guess will dissuade those from selling here and sort of force people to buy local or something like that, no?

US imports more stuff from everywhere else more than it exports to anywhere else because of supply and demand for cheaper/better quality stuff. I see Trump talk of farmers and unfair trade but other countries have their own farmers too...

Yes the point of tariffs is to protect American workers from having their jobs outsourced to cheaper labor markets by increasing the cost for foreign companies to do business here.

But it comes with a cost to American consumers, because now we have to pay higher prices to buy the products in the industries being protected by tariffs AND the products in the industries hit by retaliatory tariffs.

Midwest farmers are averaging a 20% decrease in income this summer because of these 'tariffs', aka 'T-rump tax'.

reply

Yeah that's the affect of the retaliation from China no longer buying their soybeans.

Bandaid subsidies coming in the form of 12 billion in aid. Another terrible idea.

reply

Didn't Trump strike a deal for the farmers with the European Union to buy more soybeans? Wait, maybe that was already about to take place and Trump took credit for it.

reply

Hasn't been hammered out yet but even if it does it won't come close to making up for the lost sales to China.
