What Trump did for gun control almost a year ago

President Donald Trump quietly signed a bill into law Tuesday rolling back an Obama-era regulation that made it harder for people with mental illnesses to purchase a gun.

The rule, which was finalized in December, added people receiving Social Security checks for mental illnesses and people deemed unfit to handle their own financial affairs to the national background check database.

Had the rule fully taken effect, the Obama administration predicted it would have added about 75,000 names to that database.

President Barack Obama recommended the now-nullified regulation in a 2013 memo following the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School, which left 20 first graders and six others dead. The measure sought to block some people with severe mental health problems from buying guns.

This was one of the first things Trump did as President. What good could ever come from rolling back this regulation?

Trump’s tweet failed to acknowledge the role that Florida’s lax gun laws played in the shooting. Barring institutionalization, it’s extremely difficult to keep someone with a history of mental illness from buying a gun in Florida. The accused killer legally purchased the AR-15-style rifle used in the slaughter, his family’s attorney said.

The president also ignored the fact that he actually made it easier for people with mental health issues to buy guns by revoking an Obama-era gun regulation last year.

At least he's supplying 'condolences and prayers' to the victims.

I'm surprised it got finalised in December after the Las Vegas shootings of early October.

Weird stuff going on there.

reply

It was finalized in December 2016 actually. The article is February 2017, right after Trump took office.

Ah, so the bill was only just passed and Trump got rid of it within his first month in the Oval Office.

Yeah, that there's stuff which the press could genuinely use to form a stance against him.

You know, instead of golden shower scandals and Ivanka's footwear or ketchup with steak.

John Oliver is back next week and so let's see if we've finally "Got him!" as he quips whilst pressing his celebration button.

John Oliver is great, I need to get back to watching his show.

The only weird thing is that I can't look at him now without thinking about the Larry Nassar trial. They just look SO similar!

Yeah, that there's stuff which the press could genuinely use to form a stance against him.

The problem there is that there's just SO MUCH to use against Trump, so "real issues" just get lost in the mix, and his supporters don't care.

As Trump himself said: “I could stand in the middle of 5th Avenue and shoot somebody and wouldn’t lose any voters, ok? It’s, like, incredible.”

The guy is basically a psychopath.

reply

I'll not deny you that he is a psychopath but how he got into power was due to a network of psychopaths not doing what they were meant to do (The media reporting on the actual figures) and I think we could have been left with a worse psychopath had the vote not gone the way it went.

Let's hope next time both parties put up people who can make the world better rather than each putting up a candidate who will surely be bad, without question, for some of the people they are meant to represent.
