MSNBC analyst John Heilemann asked two Democratic lawmakers in separate interviews on Tuesday whether Nunes was “compromised by the Russians” or a “Russian agent.”

“[Nunes is] behaving like someone who’s been compromised, and there are people in the intelligence community, and others with great expertise in this area, who look at him and say, ‘That guy’s been compromised,'” he said.

The tactic was reminiscent of Clinton campaign manager Robby Mook first suggesting on-air in July 2016 that Trump was colluding with Russia.

According to Schiff, after comparing the two versions "it is clear" that Republicans "made material changes to the version it sent to the White House, which Committee Members were never apprised of, never had the opportunity to review and never approved."

Jack Langer, the spokesman for Nunes, said in a statement that Schiff's letter amounted to another "strange attempt to thwart publication of the memo."

"In its increasingly strange attempt to thwart publication of the memo, the Committee Minority is now complaining about minor edits to the memo, including grammatical fixes and two edits requested by the FBI and by the Minority themselves," Langer said. "The vote to release the memo was absolutely procedurally sound, and in accordance with House and Committee rules. To suggest otherwise is a bizarre distraction from the abuses detailed in the memo, which the public will hopefully soon be able to read for themselves."

Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) compared House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes's (R-Calif.) move to make a memo on surveillance at the Department of Justice (DOJ) public to former Sen. Joseph McCarthy's (R-Wis.) aggressive probe of suspected communists in the 1950s.

"The release of this memo is really reminiscent of the darkest days of the McCarthy era, with character assassinations," Blumenthal told CNN's Alisyn Camerota on "New Day."

"It endangers methods and sources of the intelligence community, and it reflects an effort to distract from the [Robert] Mueller investigation," he continued, referring to the special counsel probing alleged ties between the Trump campaign and Russia's election meddling.
