Yup. In the U.S., if you're under 6 feet you're "short," even though the average height for a male is 5'9 (which is considered "really short," even though it's average). 6'1 doesn't cut it. You've got to be at least 6'2, preferably over, in which case the exact same person in every other respect becomes all kinds of awesome.
As the western entertainment industry increasingly selects for height in both males and females, male "sex symbols" - who can't appear inferior to other males with whom they are cast, and who need to tower over any female they may be cast with - have to be increasingly tall, even though the population's height has barely budged in decades.
