Toby Stephens and Ruth Wilson chemistry

You have got to see this version of Jane Eyre. The chemistry between Toby Stephens and Ruth Wilson is perfect. She is perfect as Jane Eyre and he is as Mr. Rochester. I have seen hundreds of British movies (romance and others) and Toby is so attractive in a not a pretty boy kind of way. His expressions, smile, voice and sexual attractiveness when he finally shows his love to Jane are so exciting to watch. I will buy this DVD and watch it over and over. One of my favorite (he is so irresistible scenes) is when he shakes hands with Jane and says, "Don't go Jane." The other versions of Jane Eyre are worth watching but this one is the best in my opinion.

Hi Morganm,

I am in complete agreement with your comments above.

You say you "will buy" this DVD. If you're in the US, I recommend spending the extra $5 or $10 and order 'The Bronte Collection.' This has 2 Jane Eyre disks, one the film as broadcast, the other with extras, such as writer and director commentaries on hours 1 and 4 (why did they skip the middle 2?) and nice interviews with both Toby and Ruth in which they talk about their thinking as to their roles. No bloopers, alas.

This version also includes Wuthering Heights, which I watched since I had never seen or read it either. So far as I'm concerned, that disk is just there for ballast for JE, as I found myself actively disliking both of the main characters.

If you're in the UK, or can otherwise get the British edition, I understand the extras come with the regular Jane Eyre edition.

This was the first time I've bought a DVD of a movie, never found one before that I liked well enough to want to watch it repeatedly.

I completely agree with this version being the best. I love it. I'm tempted to read the book but then I'm also afraid that it will be drastically different than the adaptation. Hm, still, I know I will read the book. It wouldn't be fair, I think, to love any adaptation without having read the book it's based on.

aew131: I strongly encourage you to read the book. I don't think you'll be disappointed, at all. I had read it a long time ago, then re-read it after seeing Toby and Ruth in Jane Eyre 2006, and developed a brand new appreciation for the book, and it's now my favorite. I've re-read it several times since I saw the mini-series (which I've also watched too many time to count).

One of the added attractions to reading the book *after* seeing this version is that you get to picture Toby Stephens in your mind while you're reading about Mr. Rochester. Very nice.

I love that last comment about how you now get to picture Toby Stephens as Mr. Rochester now. It's very true. I read the book first, so when I saw the mini I knew he was too attractive for the role, but I definitely did not complain about it. The book is really amazing though, I was surprised that I found it to be such a page turner. I read it in less than 2 days!

You are right, this is the best version of Jane Eyre. And the scene you liked, I had that stuck in my head for days. They really are great together.

I agree. I saw the film version twice, before finally deciding to read the book. The book has so much more to it than any movie ever could. And picturing TS as Mr. Rochester, really picked the book up for me

I still haven't finished the book though, I like to read it piece by piece, to savour it longer LOL. I find reading it by candle light also adds to the mood..........

The first few times I watched this version of Jane Eyre, I was, unlike Jane, so "overwhelmed" by Toby Stephens I hardly noticed Ruth Wilson. But after many more viewings, I do think she does a good job of balancing the governess timidity with the underlying fire and intelligence that attracts Rochester. I have since watched the Timothy Dalton version and Jane was a mouse in that one - much too controlled and pious. I never tire of watching Toby and Ruth in this one although, I confess, I could watch Toby Stephens read the phone book and be quite content.
