I too first noticed Toby Stephens in 'Black Sails' and was quite blown away by his portrayal of Captain Flint. IMO he is absolutely fantastic, the role just made for him. Many fans of the show were also amazed and disappointed that he was not nominated for an Emmy this year. Maybe 'Sails' was not as high profile as others like 'Game of Thrones' or 'Mr Robot' for instance, who knows?
I have now seen most of Toby's work and agree that he is a phenomenal acting talent. It seems he has been a respected stage performer for most of his career and has reportedly turned down Hollywood many times and much prefers the theater, although his resume does also include some quality British TV productions and the occasional movie. Before 'Black Sails' he was probably best known as a Bond villain in 'Die Another Day' and as Rochester in a wonderful 2006 BBC production of 'Jane Eyre'. Toby also comes from acting royalty, his father being Sir Robert Stephens, a knight of the London stage, and his mother Dame Maggie Smith.
This is an article about the biggest Emmy snubs this year and 'Black Sails' is mentioned.

I particularly like this bit
'Starz’s Black Sails might have flown under award radars in its first season, but three seasons deep, Toby Stephens’s nuanced performance as the complicated Captain Flint cannot be ignored. His every facial expression conveys at least five different emotions at once; his every movement telegraphing seething rage beneath his cold exterior. Toby Stephens as Flint is an actor-character match that’s akin to Bryan Cranston as Walter White. When he breaks down in tears in the third episode and gives an earth shattering monologue in the fifth episode, both moments act circles around anything else on this year’s TV.'
