Seriously every story about the upcoming movie
made it sound like fans of the book only wanted Ian as the lead actor.
Sure, he's hot but I never got why he would be the only choice.
Has he ever expressed any interest in the role or commented about it?

This is a late post, but the real fan favorite was Matt Bomer who had no interest in Fifty Shades of Grey. Ian was the second favorite and is on record (and on You Tube) expressing interest in the role. Apparently the author wanted a film actor, but the only actor of note with film credits willing to tackle the role was Charlie Hunnam. I think he would have been terrific but 90,000 crazed fans of the trilogy signed a petition wanting Charlie to be replaced...by Matt Bomer. Charlie dropped out and now neither Charlie, Matt nor Ian are in the film. It has an indie budget and indie shooting schedule so who knows how it will turn out.
