Then obviously he did his job, he convinced you his character was real. This may surprise yoy , but actors often take rules so far from their real selves to prove to themselves and the world that they truly are an ACTOR not just someone good at portraying themselves in different shows and/or movies. Nothing is worse for an actor than to be stereotyped. Many straight actors and actresses take on roles of alternate lifestyles (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) to prove themselves, earn their acting chops, so to speak. That is why an actor would chose to play a role like that and "act the way he did", and the fact that it convinced you he is really gay probably tickles him to no end.
As an aside, so if a gay actor acts a straight role and you didn't know he or she was gay, and you didn't suspect they were gay because they played straight so well, would you argue that they MUST be straight because no one acts that straight, that way unless they are straight, or does this line of reasoning only apply when someone is playing a homosexual role?
