Awful as Moriarty
His interpretation of the character is so needlessly over the top and campy to the point where watching Sherlock becomes quite difficult.
Just a terrible actor.

The point of Moriarty is, he's the complete opposite of cool, analytic and completely logic Sherlock. You just cannot predict anything that Moriarty might do next, and together with his intelligence he's as dangerous for Sherlock as it can get. And this is exactly how they had written the part and I think what Andrew did with that was absolutely genius. Just imagine to have an enemy who's really over the top like Moriarty is - can you imagine anything more unpredictable and frightening? At one point he's talking all normal and reasonable and seconds later he seems completely mad - what can you do,how can you probably find out what he's going to do next, as you know it's something really bad? How can you stop him?
A 'normal' baddie would not have been enough for a man as special as Sherlock is, he needed a special nemesis - and with Moriarty, he's got one.
And as Sherlock's not the only thing I've seen Andrew in, I can tell you he's an amazing actor! I highly recommend you to watch 'My Life In Film', 'Sea Wall', 'The Stag' or short film 'Silent Things' f.e.
I respectfully disagree.
I am Senor Velasco, I drink my milk with tabasco
He rocked!
i am not sick but i'm not well
Please don't critique an actors portrayal of a character if you know nothing about the character. He's the PERFECT Moriarty and a great actor.
shareI disagree entirely. I loved him as Moriarty. So did a lot of other people. Probably explains why he won a BAFTA for it.
shareWell said. Andrew is a very talented actor. I actually watched the other things you mentioned, solely because I couldnt get over how great he was in Sherlock. And he is brilliant in those as well. I hope to see much more from him in the future.
shareEverything is subjective... thankfully. All opinion, not "fact", despite that you post it as such.
While you dislike his portrayal, he's won numerous awards for it. His talent is shown in the range of roles he plays,& how completely different a person he is in each persona. Moriarty is a mad adversary, bored of "the Final Problem" & playing deadly games w/Holmes. But in "Pride" he plays a vulnerable, rather lost, homesick young gay Welshman. It seems impossible that the soft, warm eyes of Gethin could be in the same face as the cold, mad eyes of Moriarty...
*Shrug* Tis all opinion. You like him or you don't. And honestly, I didn't love Moriarty until I saw Series 2, then I was hooked. There wasn't enough of him in Series 1 for me to see where they were going w/the character.
I agree with the OP 100%. Although I like the Sherlock show much better than the Robert Downey JR.-movies I much prefer the Moriarty in those films.
The only thing I get from his performance in the show is that he's trying insanely hard to match Benedict Cumberbaches' original and funny spin on Sherlock, and not quite managing to.
