Since Hiro has been acting since the age of 5 in his native Japan, I highly doubt that you have seen him in "every role". He has tied the late Toshiro Mifune in the number of Best Actor awards he has won in Japan, and was the top action star, surpassing his mentor, Sonny Chiba, for many years. Hiro also is the only Asian actor to appear on stage with the Royal Shakespeare Company in the U.K. and was awarded the Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth. He can do drama, comedy, action, musicals (he once was a pop/recording star in his 20's), traditional classics, and practically anything you throw at him.

Hiro's acting chops are stellar and I think he is one of the top 2 Japanese actors working today (the other is Koji Yakusho). It's unfortunate that the U.S. market confines him to the stereotypical "silent samurai" roles because he is capable of so much more.

I think he and Tadanaoo Asano are two of the finest actors of any ethnicity. You are right that he is type cast. Such a shame. There is a whole world of movies out there for us if we would just look outside the US movies.

I think it is a pity how asiatic movies are show along Europe.. the city were I live is almost imposible to find a good japanesse movie ( and I have many) except manga movies and of courser jibly studio.... the rest , you must be and expert searching in second hand stores.
my last acquisition HELL IN THE PACIFIC with Mifune-san and Lee marvin.just awesome!!!
