Superman Returns Made Respectable Money at Box Office

My apologies if this topic has already been discussed. Below is JMHO....

I was reading the Entertainment Weekly magazine from back in June 2013 that highlighted all the actors and series/films of the Superman saga. I had originally heard that Superman Returns only made about $200 million at the box office...this EW article says it was double that, $400 million. But since the 2006 film failed to reignite interest in the story, SR was considered to be something of a failure.

I must be from the dark ages...since when does a film make $400 million and still be considered a failure? I think it's partly because kids and young adults today have films like Iron Man to admire, with lots of gimmicks and gadgets and box office grosses close to $1 billion. Superman has no gadgets...he doesn't even need a car because he flies everywhere!

Brandon, you did a fine job as Superman, and you are a class act to wish Henry Cavill the best in the role. Now pick some good projects and get back in front of the camera!

I'm not familiar with that EW article, but according to boxofficemojo.com the worldwide box office for SR was $400 million and domestic - $200 million.

I agree that it's quite a lot, but I think the problem was that the film's budget was $270 million and it had to make at least twice that amount to be considered successful - so it fell a little short of that goal. Still, I don't think it's fair when people say it flopped.

I second that! Brandon is really a class act (but we knew it all along, didn't we? :)

It did make a profit but not as much as WB wanted. I would have loved a sequel and more from Brandon.

I have also said before that I wish WB would make some animated sequels with Brandon.

I think WB expected the films to do better and although it was a big hit, not massive enough with lukewarm reviews from the critics.

Its that man again!!

The Problem was Budget. A Superman movie in 2006, would cost $200+ Million ? Movie did not even have that huge action scenes, it had like 15 mins of action all together. Not to mention Superman returns budget carried all the expenses of failed Superman movies before, like Nic Cage's salary for Superman lives, its half production budget, etc.
