She always plays badasses because, well, she's a badass in real life, thus she's really convincing at it, thus whenever a script has a character like you're describing they usually call her. It's called typecasting, it's how the business works, don't knock her for it. One role where she sort of played against type was her character on Lost. I mean, for the most part her character was the usual tough-as-nails b*tch, but she was allowed to suggest some masked vulnerability, and she even had a scene where she broke down and cried. That was actually the first thing I saw her in, and it was that role that made me like her and convinced me she was a good actress. It's too bad she doesn't get offered more roles like that, though.
EDIT: D'oh! You mentioned Lost! Sorry I didn't read more carefully. While I agree that her role on Lost was pretty much the same as those other ones, it wasn't exactly the same for the reasons above.
