What is up with this man's career?

Can someone please explain to me what's up with this dude's career?

You think being in movies like the Indiana Jones series or the Lord of the Rings trilogy would get your career to really take off, but why is it that this guy hasn't gotten any good roles at all and instead chooses to make crappy ass low budget TV Movies or Direct-to-Video movies? If that's all he's being offered lately then that's kind of sad.

The guy is now 70 years old, looks a bit botoxed and gets what is available.

I doubt he is complaining, he had a very good 1980s and 1990s with a role in a Bond film, various tv shows in the USA and UK and the Lords of the Rings saga in the last decade and its not many actors from that franchise are doing fantastically well at the moment.

Its that man again!!

Watch his British TV performances from the 1970s onwards. Do you think being in multiplex garbage is "success" in acting? If so, you have a lot to learn.

He's in 8 movies in 2015 alone including a television series, and in 2014 he was in 6 movies and three different TV series... at his age I would say he is extremely busy.

I have admired him since his appearances in the Indiana Jones movies, Untouchables, and Sliders. I am disappointed that he left those two series before they finished. I also enjoyed him stretching himself in the Christian Movie Captive. I just wish he would do more movies where he does not get killed off so early in the production. He has a very impressive number of credits but in a lot of shows I just get to liking him and BANG! Congratulations and best wishes always in your career.

Funny, I was thinking JRD has had a very successful career; he's been a busy working actor for decades and appeared in popular productions like I, Claudius to the LOTR trilogy. When I see how few actors last as long and often have years between jobs, I think JRD's done well. As for not getting a career boost from the Indiana Jones/LOTR movies, well few of the actors there did for long.

I came here because I'd just seen JRD in I, Claudius - along with Patrick Stewart (of Star Trek: The Next Generation fame) - and I wondered "how long has he been acting?" He's not made it to the stellar ranks in the profession but he's worked steadily. I'm thinking he's had fun with his roles, the money's added up, and he's still getting offered parts: how would that generate a disdain for his career? Most actors should be so lucky.

Agreed on the career boost point. The actors from LotR that saw great movies after for a long time were already on that track beforehand. The only two to three that saw a major boost were Sean Bean, Andy Serkis, and maybe Karl Urban (counting Star Trek). Last ones a bit iffy I know. I would wager that Serkis career is based almost wholly on his portayel of gollum. And if Sean Bean dies in it, it's usually a sure bet.
