What he created with 'Drive', he ruined with 'Only God Forgives'.

Drive was daring, new, different, provoking.
Extreme images, but slow.
Subtle, but intense.

But in Only God Forgives, there were no reasons for the slow pacing, the (many) moments of silence. There were weird characters with no back ground or build up. There were moments that were completely vague as if parts were let out.

It felt like a boring book, with many pages missing.

Refn tried to repeat Drive, but failed.

No, he repeated (and built upon) his Fear X and Valhalla Rising, but the experience of Drive helped him shape this particular case of nightmarish stream of consciousness into a far more compelling movie than Fear X and Valhalla Rising ever were.

If you think he tried to repeat Drive you´ve clearly missed something. It is quite clear that Only God Forgives is an attempt of doing something completely opposite from Drive. Drive was his version of a mainstream blockbuster, but now he has retreated back to his art-house roots.

they cured him alright

Only God Forgives was way different(and was meant to be way different) than Drive.

He made the film that he wanted to make. Sorry you didnt like OGF but dont give up on Refn yet. He's only in his 40s and will make so many more great films.

I for one dug OGF. It was weird and a little slow but overall it was a well made film

reply

I havent seen this movie yet. But have to say after the big success Drive was, the reviews for this and its IMDB score are dissapointing. I will still look out for his next couple of films to see if they score better.

reply

A little secret for you: NEVER MIND THE SCORE

reply

If I didn't mind the score I would be watching every movie out there. I have to use it as a basis.

reply

If you want to see a film prior to seeing its score, why let some insignificant little number on a website affect your decision and change your mind? See whatever films you're interested in, pass on the ones you couldn't care less about. Easy as.
