Aestheticization of violence in the films of Nicolas Winding Refn

Is the violence Nicolas Winding Refn uses in his range of films, shown to be too graphic and disturbing or more poetic and glamourized?

reply

I'd say all four. His films are definitely violent, but it's never just a meat grinder. The violence has purpose.

The man's my favorite director of all time, but his films aren't for everyone.

"Only God Forgives" is GENIUS. The Critics are morons who will eat their words. Count on it.

its graphic but poetic, the only scene i have felt out of place by its over the top nature was the torture scene of only god forgives.

He tries to use each depending on the context. While the violence in Valhalla Rising is graphic, it's also somewhat poetic when paired with the setting. The violence in Drive however is jarring and meant to be disturbing (to the characters in the film). However, the violence in Drive is quite glamourized to fit with the Hollywood persona that courses through it's veins.

The intestines in the garbage disposal in Pusher 3 though... (not that I care - I like the movie - that's just what popped into mind when I read 'meat grinder')
