His movies are beautifully shot but...

...they carry nothing of substance. He really has nothing to say in his films and his writing and dialogue are completely shallow. His movies have the feeling of being an exercise in cinematography instead of the work of a proper writer/director. A clear case of style over substance.

He's not for everyone, but he certainly has his fans. I personally think his movies have a lot of substance, but in most of his movies it isn't established through dialogue. A lot of people aren't into that kind of thing, understandably, but I really adore his style. And have you seen his Danish films? The pusher trilogy and Bleeder are both very well written, and masterfully shot.

I also think his Danish films carry alot of substance. Bleeder is very autobiographical, I think. Drive and Bronson also has a lot going for it, but I think Refn's problem is that he is not good at articulating it, and I don't mean discussing it which is Nolan's weakness, as good as he is.
