I Feel for Refn After "My Life"

Last week, I went to a double bill of "My Life Directed by Nicolas Winding Refn" followed by "Only God Forgives" and, after seeing the documentary and the final film together afterwards, I actually feel a great deal for him afterwards. It hasn't changed my feelings on the film - which I thought was "beautiful smoke and mirrors" - but it gave me a vast appreciation for what Refn set out to do and how it felt like he was caught in the crossfire between what his fanbase (both built in and recently made due to "Drive") expected of him and what he wanted to do to appease his creativity. As a fledgling filmmaker, it's heart wrenching to see him descending into such deep depression over the execution and taking his nearest and dearest close to the metaphorical chasm. Whether you like "Only God Forgives" or not, I'd highly recommend seeing "My Life Directed by Nicolas Winding Refn" soon to get a really good look at what craft and heart goes into the filmmaking process.
