We need more filmmakers like Refn

Only God Forgives was a strange, lovely and highly original film. Very enigmatic, very unpredictable, quite funny and shocking. We need more filmmakers like Refn who refrain from delivering the same cookie cutter product every couple of years. His associative style of filmmaking is a complete singularity in today's film industry. Refn is a true artist. He took a real risk with Only God Forgives. It clearly had the potential to piss off a lot of people who had liked his previous film Drive. And it DID piss off a lot of people.

And now he's directing a sex thriller.

I think he could be the modern day Kubrick. He needs to work with higher budgets though and he needs to focus his power on creating a real masterpiece. So far, his films have been very original and very good, but not brilliant yet like Kubrick's.

I have great hopes for him. He's probably my fave director working today.

Directors I like: Kubrick, Bergman, Godard, Pasolini, Wilder, Welles, Tarkovsky, Lynch, Refn

Discovering Refn's films was a truly great experience for me. All of his films are a real treat to watch. You can really feel his passion for cinema. I think he's already had an extremely remarkable career at this point, enough to justify his place among my favorite directors. He's made 9 films already, and only one of them in my eyes wasn't amazing.(and in Fear X's defense,I still think it has a wonderful atmosphere)"Drive", "Pusher 2", and "Bleeder" are my favorites by him, and among my favorite movies. Valhalla Rising and Only God Forgives are beautifully shot and underappreciated gems. Bronson's extremely memorable. At this point I like Refn more than Scorsese. He makes his films closer to the heart. I would love to see him make another film that becomes a huge hit, but if not, I'd be fine with him being a more underground cult director. He fits the role perfectly.

I completely agree! Only God Forgives is criminally underrated & misunderstood imo. Can't wait for The Neon Demon.
