But, the few lines she had, she delivered them well.
in the book, her character didn't really have a lot of dialogue.

I hate that. Why did they bother getting such a fantastic actress and then under utilize her. I know it had done a lot to boost her popularity but seriously she is fantastic and all she does is stand there and look pretty.

I wholeheartedly agree with everyone here that Elizabeth Reaser has been criminally underused/underutilised in both the Twilight and New Moon films.

Twilight was the one that first introduced me to her as an actress. Despite her small role/minimal amount of lines in the film, I thought she filled the role of Esme Cullen really well. What's important about Esme is that she feel 'warm' (yes, I realise this is probably not the best word to use when describing vampires who are "ice cold", but you get my meaning) and 'motherly'. I thought she well and truly achieved this. In her introduction scene (the one where they're cooking for Bella), I just loved how softly spoken Esme was, how she seemed so kind-hearted/friendly (plus her smile was RADIANT), and yet she had that great bit where she told Rosalie to pick up the mess she'd made (Esme knows how to run a house).

For me, what matters (when it comes to Esme) is that she feel like someone who it would take no time at all to feel comfortable around and that she come across as this caring motherly character. I liked her hanging with Bella while the others played baseball. Given how little screentime she had, I thought she got across clearly what sort of character Esme was.

The severe lack of screentime in NM was something that I wasn't too happy about, but yet again...she played the role of Esme as well as was to be expected given the restrictions of how many lines she got/how ltitle she was onscreen.

I'm hoping that, if not in Eclipse, than in Breaking Dawn at least, she gets more screentime and more lines. She's a good-looking woman, and there are so many actresses that might be more "well-known", but who I feel would not have seemed as 'tender'/caring as Elizabeth did in the role. What I mean is, other actresses could probably have conveyed being nice, friendly and whatever, but there was just something about Elizabeth and how she played Esme that made me think, "Damn...she's an incredible mother (for all intents and purposes) to the Cullen family.". You can tell that she cares about every single one of them (hell, it seems like she couldn't possibly not-care about anyone). It was interesting, in NM, that she had to leave the room after Bella's little papercut accident, along with everyone else (except Carlisle). I remember in Eclipse that, when Rosalie is explaining her backstory/origin story to Bella, she mentions that she's done better than most of the others when it comes to having never fed on humans (she says she's even beaten Esme when it comes to having a record of never feeding on humans, I think).

ANYway, point being...to me, Esme is like the mother of your friend or someone. She's this incredibly lovely person, who you just want to hug all the time and who you can't help but LOVE, and even thinking of someone being in any way *mean* to her makes your blood boil. I don't think I could stand seeing Esme upset - and, to me, that's exactly how I wanted to feel when watching her onscreen. I wanted her to be someone who you could feel very protective of (but who we all know can handle herself no problem at all). While it does slightly bug me in the books, when Bella underestimates the Cullens' strength/abilities (she's constantly worried for Esme and Alice - but then, I admit I was a little bit too), I can understand her not being able to quite get past how innocent-looking and harmless those two characters seem. They look like they couldn't hurt a fly...but we all know better (Alice especially kicks arse - as evidenced by what she did to James in the first film;)

I apologise for this^ long post. I guess I could have just simply said, "I agree with y'all."...but it's been quite a long time since I posted here, and I just thought it was time to check out the boards I'd once posted on and see what other people's thoughts were.

The role of Esme has very few lines. The books are the same and they are sticking as near to the books as they can. Just because you think she is a fantastic actress (and she is, I agree) doesn't mean they should add extra lines just to utilize her.
I am sure she is not "mad" because she is the one who accepted the role and I'm sure she knew how many lines and how much screen time she would get.
