Well, that's the whole crux of the "controversy". Pluralizing potato adds an "e". Didn't stop anyone from killing him over this.
Maybe he was thinking of Ivanhoe..
It's a pretty easy mistake to make because it doesn't make a lot of sense. Home many words end with an "o" and then have an "es" added after when pluralizing it? If you look at the word "hoe", it ends with an "e" already, so it would be logical to think Potato would as well.
Another word that doesn't make sense to me is "busing" (transporting people by bus). I think it'd make a lot more sense to spell it "bussing" (like to bus several tables at a restaurant) for consistency sake, but nooooooooo.
