Why 15 years for a black belt?

How come it took so long for this guy to get a black belt in BJJ/GJJ? That seems like a long time. I know the Gracies are strict but I thought it took only about 5-6 years to get a black belt with regular practice.

A lot of the more famous Gracie students are themselves fighters who most of the time get a belt grading promotion based of wiunning a particular fight.

Ed also will have taken huge chunks of time off training whilst filming in other parts of the country.

Remenber, a twelve episode series might take up to six months or more to film, thereby not allowing him the same time to practice as maybe say a plumber who lives just across town from the class.

There are a number of reasons that it took him 15 years, including the person's apptitude for learning, time restraints, location etc.

I thought of all that but how long ago did he stop filming "Married With Children"? He did another show on TV but that lasted briefly. Other than that, he's just been making bit roles in movies that couldn't have caused him to take off THAT much time. The average movie takes 3 months to shoot and so it would take him less than that if he had a small role in it.

I didn't know that bit about the Gracie students winning fights to get belt promotions bit though. That's really true? So if you win a NAGA tournament you might go up a color?

Married... stoppped being broadcast in Aug 97 (original run), so they probably stopped filming in early 97.

Agreed, Ed hsn't been on screen that much, but also take into account stage work.

Maybe he also just didn't want to take a lesson all that often and went on holiday with family memebers a lot or something?

Not sure, guess only himself and his teachers know.

Well, it still is odd if you consider the fact that the little Gracies were children when he was there and now help run the school by teaching. H*ll, they're even something like 3rd or 4th degrees.

Everything you see on IMDb is not EVERYTHING that he does with his career.

You are correct that most martial arts generally require between 4 and 6 years to attain a black belt. However, in most martial arts the black belt symbolizes "the end of the beginning" of your training, but most people generally stop at this, and at this point, most people are not generally qualified to be full fledged teachers. However, in brazilian jiu jitsu, when you attain black belt status, you are considered qualified to be a full fledged teacher and not just an "advanced student".
Also be it known, there are some schools where you can get a black belt after a year or two... stay away from those places, they just want your money.

ROFL at getting a BJJ BB with 5 years of regular practice... Bjj is not tae kwon do/karate, dude...

you'd have to be a phenom on the ground and WIN TOURNAMENTS in order to get a BB that soon. Specially under the Machados/Gracies

if you don't enter tournaments (probably his case) you'll progress slower compared to the ones that do go in tournaments...

I'm a BJJ Purple Belt and I'm training bjj for more than 6 years... I'll get my brown in January if everything goes as planed. And I enter tournaments.

Edit: I train at Gracie Barra - Salvador.
