32 and playing a student

How come in movies the actors are always well older in real life than the character they play. Lochlyn Munro for example, was 32 when he did Deadman on Campus which was a college flick. Also most of the women that where in Saved by The Bell : College Years ( a televisual treat ) were over 30. To be fair they don't look that old, I guess the fountain of eternal youth is based in Los Angeles.

Not to mention that Roddy McDowall was roughly 38 or 40 years old and played a high school senior in "Lord Love a Duck"!!!

I freaked out when I saw what Lochlyn's bday was. How does he look so damn young???

Film culture in our society deals in physical idealization. Look at the average teenager and you will see a slight frame, some skin/acne issues and features that just haven't fully been "grown into" yet. As such, Hollywood regularly turns to actors who are just a bit (or in this case, quite a bit) older than the actual age of the characters in order to supply this illusion. This strategy continues for some time up through the age categories.

Given this convention, Lochlyn's casting as a college student makes sense. He looked the part (if you're buying into the idealized college student look).
