Such a Sexy Lady

I recently watched the film version of KISS ME KATE (1953). Ann Miller was a real standout.

I don't generally think of tap dancing as sexy, but it definitely was the way Miller performed it. Of course, she was beautiful with a great figure and legs, so that helped, but she's also a lot of fun to watch, seems to really be enjoying herself, and, a rarity among the wonderful dancing ladies of Hollywood, she did her own singing.

I recall a critic saying of her performance as the "villainess" in EASTER PARADE that it was easy for him to dislike "Nadine Hale," the character she played, but impossible for him to dislike Ann Miller.

I can see his point.

This is how I know I'm getting old...

Mulholland Drive has been one of my favorite movies since I first saw it in 2001. I watched it in a theater, I bought it on DVD, I bought it on blu-ray, I just bought it on 4K UHD and re-watched it for probably the 25th time or so. There's a minor character in it named Coco, a glamorous old biddy who manages an upscale apt complex. This latest re-watch was the first time I looked at her and thought, "Y'know, I bet this old broad was something to write home about back before electricity." So I pay attention to the end credits- Coco -------- Ann Miller." Sure, I've heard that name a thousand times. She was a star, but I have no idea in what. So I'm trying to figure which of her old movies I should check out and looking at random stuff on youtube, e.g. her appearance on What's My Line. All I can say for now is YOWZA, HUBBA HUBBA, and god DAMN she could get it back in her day.

Check out Kiss Me Kate (probably her best showcase). Easter Parade, On the Town, etc. Really, in any movie she was a beautiful sexy dancer, and unlike most of the talented Hollywood dancing ladies, Miller did her own singing.

As one critic said of her appearance in ON THE TOWN: "She's unquestionably a splendid animal."
