No More Villiers

Tobias confirmed on his blog that he won't be appearing in Bond 22.

I thought the character had great potential, but obviously the writers didn't think so.

I agree that there was interesting potential in the character, and the guy's really good on-screen (he was great in "Rome"), but they didn't exactly do a lot with him in Bond 21, did they ?

You might very well think that. I couldn't possibly comment.

I thought they were going to set up Villiers as the anti-Moneypenny; someone to compete with Bond for M's affection and verbally spar, instead of flirt. I think that would be a neat dynamic.

I agree, filmtheory. Though personally I thought the most recent Bond flick was a bloody mess, storywise. Character threads weren't developed well at all, and it had possibly the least impressive "villain" and most UN-Bond-worthy plot of any movie so far. I get that they were trying to shed the camp excesses of the Roger Moore and Pierce Brosnan eras and bring the stories back to gritty earth, but for me the whole thing turned out quite ho-hum.

The writers/producers seem determined to mould this new Bond into a harsh world where people are snuffed out or discarded without a thought, and maybe that's why they weren't interested in continuing Villiers as a character. But I think they need to find some level of continuity as well, if they're going to keep people interested. They can't keep bringing Felix Leiter into every story, can they?

I agree with puirt-a-beul about Quantum of Solace. They definitely rushed production and didn't get it right.
