I hear ya mate.
Amongst the most influential visual artists in cinema, especially in the sci-fi genre, Syd Mead, H.R. Giger and Moebius (Jean Giraud) have always stood out. Now they're all gone. Mead and Giger both worked on Alien and Moebius crossed Mead's path on Blade Runner.
Mead started out as an industrial artist in automotive industry and his work is so unique that an eclusive job title, Visual Futurist had been coined only to describe him and no one else.
His books, Oblagon and The Movie Art of Syd Mead are my prized possessions. It almost sounds contradictory but his 'industrial art' gives me a feeling of strange serenity.
RIP, Visual Futurist.
