shareI don't know how welfare checks generally work, but if she was mentally unstable and nobody knew about it then that's probably what led to what happened.
shareTypically they go and check on the person if she needs care then they transport her to be evaluated. Ideally whoever called in provides all pertinent information so officers know what to expect. Without a lot more detail there is no way to no for sure however a BB gun looks to much like a gun for an officer to roll the dice on.
shareThat's what's so sad about the whole thing. It sounds like she didn't have anyone close enough to know her situation and that she may be packing a toy BB gun. I have a relative who is mentally ill but is committed to a facility (can't drive, is under her father's stewardship, no credit card or cash to make purchases without supervision).
