They are real life friends. Richard mentioned at one of the interviews they did together that they both would have a small dinner party because they have a lot of friends in common. As an aside, Richard has been very good friends with Matt Smith who has been dating Lily for the past year. Richard's long time girlfriend, Jenna Coleman, was the assistant to Matt's 11th doctor.
Richard and Lily make a great on-screen couple. They will be working together again on a stage production of Romeo and Juliet next year, directed by Kenneth Branagh.
