I REALLY enjoy his acting; he and Laurie Holden were what originally attracted me to TWD, and I've been increasingly impressed by his character work with each passing season.
BUT, as someone who lived in the South for 30 years, I sometimes find his 'Southern' accent distracting. Given, it's one of the better ones that I've heard, and it's WONDERFUL for an English actor. But it sounds as if his dialect coach used a stereotypical mishmash of US-Southern regional accents. If you're familiar with the southern US, you'll know that there is no such thing as a generic 'Southern' accent. Each region of the South has its own accent; the accent in western Mississippi is TOTALLY different to that of northeast Tennessee, for example. Anyway, l hear a little Carolina Lowlands and Missisippi thrown into his version of a Georgia accent.
It doesn't bug me enough to stop watching. And there are American actors out there who do a FAR WORSE version of a 'Southern' accent.
