Highly underrated... Why the hate?

This guy is highly underrated and elevates nearly every film he is in...

He needs to be in more movies...

I don't understand the hate.. Why can't we look at the art, rather than focusing on the artist?

Possibly the greatest actor of his generation?

Was discussing this with a few friends and we couldn't come up with a viable alternative... thoughts?

I've always loved his work and respected him as one of the few true artists that we have left today. Sure, he may have his less than glorious moments in real life (as so many of us do, despite the number that would admit it), but his commitment to his work probably is unparalleled. I guess it just depends on what you would define as "his generation"; where the high and low cut off would be.

Shia: 33*
Gyllenhaal: 38
J. Gordon-Levitt: 38
Redmayne: 37
Garfield: 35*
Gosling: 38
A. Driver: 35 *
R. Pattinson: 33*
J. Bell: 33*

Now, if you would consider the other actors too old, that would have to be almost anyone's Top 5. Out of that group, Pattinson has really surprised me in a couple of things, particularly in "Good Time", but the overall body of work just isn't there. Out of the others, I'd definitely say that Shia and Bell are your main contenders. That's where it really gets tough for me, as I've always been a big fan of Bell, as well. Both are child actors that were able to have and sustain adult careers. So then I have to look at the films they've been in. Both, again, incredible. Their careers even cross paths in "Nymphomaniac: Vol. II". Just out of personal preference of films, I guess I'd give the slight edge to Bell, but man, it's a tough one. Fun to think about, anyhow.

Edit: Damn, now I'm second guessing myself lol. I had to leave for a bit, and on the drive, I started trying just to recall their individual performances from memory alone, and while I still probably prefer Bell's film choices overall, without the internet's influence, Shia's performances are definitely more memorable and seem to have more emotion behind them. Still tough for me, though.

No way. Shia is talented, but has very little range. I also have triple separating his characters from him as a person. Ever time I see this guy all I can think is woman beater, drug user, racist little prick.
