Is it homophobic if you can tell someone is gay just by looking at them?

I mean, this guy just screams "faaaaaabulous."

reply

I always wondered if he was just typecast or if he was just limited as an actor and couldn’t pass as straight.

reply

WHO SAID HE EVER WANTED TO PASS FOR STRAIGHT?...HE HAD A VERY GOOD CAREER BEING JUST WHO HE WAS. NOEMOJI

reply

Acting is creating a character that is not who you are. However, if he enjoyed playing gay and didn't want to challenge himself to do anything else, that was his business and I hope he had fun doing it.

reply

I SOMEHOW DO NOT THINK THESE TYPE OF COMMENTS WOULD BE MADE ABOUT A STRAIGHT ACTOR WHO NEVER PLAYED A GAY CHARACTER. NOEMOJI

reply

According to Tom Hanks we no longer have to deliberate on such scenarios

reply

I never claimed he wanted to pass as straight. I just wondered if he could because in all the roles I've seen him in he was obviously gay.

The comparison with straight characters is unfair since straight people and characters are a large majority. Someone could by chance always have straight roles but if you're characters are always gay there is no chance it's by accident.

It could be that he's simply typecast or prefers gay roles. But it also could be that he's just not good enough of an actor to play someone so different from himself.

EXACTLY WHAT YOU EXPECT TO HEAR WHEN A MAN DIES...BRAVO. NOEMOJI

reply

Is it heterophobic if you can tell someone is straight?

reply

No, but you make a good point.

reply

THAT'S A WIN. NOEMOJI

reply

He’s quite open about being gay. On talk shows he talks about being a gay boy growing up in Tennessee.

reply

I didn't know that. I just assumed he was which is why I questioned if it's homophobic.

reply

I don’t believe that’s why you asked at all. You’re smart enough to know it’s not homophobic, but I suspect you were wanting a reaction from a certain selection of members who will inevitably come to any post that mentions homosexuality with guns a’blazing.

reply

No, it's a legitimate question. I've heard people say that it's homophobic because it implies that gay people have a look. When I look at Leslie Jordan, he seemed gay to me, but being flamboyant doesn't automatically make someone gay. I mean, I kind of understand the argument because it's based on assumption of physical appearance, but it's hard to determine if it's actually homophobic.

reply

It’s not homophobic. At worst it’s an assumption based on a stereotype, but we all do that and it certainly doesn’t mean we hate a particular type of person because we process things through visual information like looks and mannerisms.

reply

but being flamboyant doesn't automatically make someone gay.

Being flamboyant is an even more accurate gage to homosexuality than looks.

reply

Yes it is. To acknowledge the evidence you see with your eyes and hear with your ears is homophobic.

reply

I suppose that makes me dickhead-phobic when I read your posts then 🫣

Here are Bill Burrs thoughts on the matter.

Pretty much how I feel. I'm going to hell.

reply

No, it's not. But the fake interwebs people say it is.
